Silver Care
Silver does not oxidize in air. However, it does react with sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide in the air or other sulphur compounds and chloride salts causing it to discolor, commonly referred to as tarnish. Sulphur or chloride may be present in air pollution, cigarette smoke, foods such as egg yolk, mustard, table salt, vinegar, olives, salad dressing, perspiration, rubber floor coverings, rubber bands, bleach and household synthetic detergents. The tarnish must be removed regularly to keep the silver items bright and sparkling in its natural sheen Care could be taken to delay the tarnishing process and some of the activities to AVOID include the following:-
| a) |
Applying hair colors or permanent solutions while wearing silver jewelry. |
| b) |
Showering or swimming with jewelry on. |
| c) |
Spraying perfumes, lotions, hair spray, suntan lotions, or oils of any kind on jewelry. |
| d) |
Physical Activities (Sweat). |

Storage
| • |
Store the silver jewelry in a cool, dark and dry place. |
| • |
Wrap the jewelry in acid-free tissue and store in tarnish resistant cloth or polyethylene bags. |
| • |
Keep items separately to avoid the items from being scratches when rubbed against each other. |
| • |
Ensure that all traces of moisture from the jewelry pieces by drying them thoroughly before storing. |
| • |
Place an anti-tarnish strip in the bag but do not allow the strips to touch the jewelry and change the strip regularly. If anti-tarnish strip is not available, you may use ordinary blackboard chalk. Add a single piece of white chalk to the drawer or cabinet where the silver is stored. |

Cleansing
Always remember that metal reacts differently to cleaning chemicals compared to gemstones and crystals. This means, a suitable cleaning chemical for silver jewelry may not be suitable for the gemstones and crystals. Always read the labels and test on small areas of the jewelry first. Some of the cleaning methods include:-
| • |
Polish using a polishing cloth that is non-abrasive. Always rinse and polish with soft cloth or felt. |
| • |
Cleaning using silver dips. It is recommended that this be only performed by experienced jeweler to avoid damages. |
| • |
Do not clean jewelry with toothpaste or soda bicarbonate, as these items are too abrasive for silver jewelry. |
| • |
When using commercial cleaner, rinse the silver in water and polish dry with soft cloth as residues of some polish left on silver may cause silver to tarnish faster. |
| • |
Chemical electrolysis should not be used on silver jewelry unless it is done by professional jeweler. |
| • |
Do not use silver dip on rhodium or rhodium-plated jewelry, as this will damage the rhodium finish. |
| • |
Try Ionic jewelry cleaners or Ultrasonic cleaners; remember to read the instruction manual. |
| • |
Windex is often used to shine up silver but do not use Windex or any other ammonia solution on oxidized sterling silver. Spray Windex on the jewelry, wait a few moments, rinse, and wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth. |
